Tech Director (f/m/d)

München
Full-time
Permanent employee
78,000 - 100,000 € per year

Your role:

As Tech Director, you will help shape the technical direction of Aesir across all projects. You will lead our programming and tech disciplines, make sure teams have the right foundations in place, and help turn company-level strategy into practical decisions that support production.

You will report to the CTO and act as disciplinary manager for our Programmers and Tech Leads. This includes people development, hiring, feedback, performance, and helping leads grow into stronger technical and managerial roles.

This is not a pure management position, though. We expect you to stay close to the code. You will not work as a regular production developer, but you should be comfortable building prototypes, running technical spikes, and validating ideas before teams commit to them. When we are considering a new architecture, rendering approach, engine workflow, or pipeline change, we want someone who can test the idea hands-on and give the team confidence in the direction.

The kind of stuff you`ll be doing:

  • Help build the future of Aesir’s Tech Department together with the other directors, with real ownership and a focus on long-term quality.
  • Lead Programming Leads and Tech Leads as their disciplinary manager, including 1:1s, growth conversations, hiring, performance, and feedback.
  • Prototype and validate important technical directions before teams invest production time in them.
  • Stay close to current technology trends, including UE5 releases, Angelscript, rendering tech, AI-assisted development, animation pipelines, and build infrastructure.
  • Drive technical quality across projects by reviewing architecture decisions, assessing technical risk, encouraging automated testing where it makes sense, and escalating issues when a different approach is needed.
  • Work closely with Game Directors, Producers, and the Tech Art Director to make sure technical and creative goals support each other.
  • Coach leads through difficult technical and people decisions, especially as some of them grow into formal management roles.
  • Represent technology in cross-departmental and production discussions, with the authority and experience to make decisions rather than simply pass on information.

Your Profile

Must-haves

  • Senior-level experience in game programming, with a track record of shipped titles, ideally AA or larger.
  • Several years of disciplinary leadership experience with engineers, including hiring, development, evaluation, and giving clear feedback.
  • Strong Unreal Engine experience, including UE4 and UE5, with a good understanding of where the engine is strong and where it can create challenges.
  • Solid C++ and software architecture skills. You can read an unfamiliar codebase and form a useful technical opinion quickly.
  • A practical prototyping mindset. When an idea needs validation, you are comfortable opening a project and testing it directly.
  • The ability to move between strategic and hands-on thinking. You can set direction across several projects, but also spot risks in an architecture review.
  • Clear and direct English communication skills, including with non-engineers and other departments.
  • Confidence in discussions where not everyone agrees, with the ability to challenge decisions constructively.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Unreal Engine Angelscript, the Hazelight fork, or similar scripting layers on top of Unreal Engine.
  • Familiarity with Tech Art, tools, or pipeline work, even if they are not your main discipline.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development workflows such as Claude Code, Copilot, or agentic pipelines.
  • Work-for-hire or publisher-facing experience.
  • Experience managing technology across multiple projects.
  • German language skills.
